Dr Elena Provenzano is Lead Breast Histopathologist for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, overseeing breast cancer diagnosis in the Cambridge Breast Unit. As a key link between the diagnostic service and breast cancer clinical trials and research programme, she is pathology lead for several breast cancer trials that include PARTNER and PBCP. Her main interests are the assessment of tumour response to neoadjuvant therapy and molecular biology of breast cancer. Elena is Deputy for the PathLake Consortium in Cambridge, which has resulted in the implementation of digital pathology at Addenbrookes with upcoming trials looking at use of AI algorithms in breast cancer diagnosis and biomarker assessment. She is regional Pathology Professional Clinical Advisor for the NHS Breast Screening Programme in the East of England overseeing Quality Assurance in breast cancer diagnosis.
Title: Pathology
The introduction of digital pathology is transforming Histopathology. The manual process of creating the slides remains the same, however scanning of slides to allow viewing of Whole Slide Images on a monitor rather than down the microscope is changing how pathologists work and opening the door to the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence in routine practice. AI algorithms have the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility, and to reduce turnaround times. In Cambridge, the breast pathology service is now fully digitised and we are involved in two AI projects. I will share some of the opportunities and challenges associated with the transition to digital pathology.
