Gary Rubin

Dr Gary Rubin studied medicine at University College and St George’s in London, qualifying in 1979. His radiology training was in London and Sydney.  In 1989 he became a consultant radiologist at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, then director of East Sussex and Brigthon’s breast screening programme. He retired from full time work in 2017 but still works part-time in Worthing and Brighton. His ambition is to wean himself from work and truly retire soon, but he has been saying this for some time.

Dr Rubin was meetings secretary for the British Society of Breast Radiology for six years but otherwise was just a jobbing radiologist. Brighton is known for its diverse population, so it is not uncommon to see trans-gender people in its breast clinics. In 2021, in view of this experience, Dr Rubin was asked to speak about breast screening and trans-gender people. Since then, care of this group has been a special interest of his. He has taken part in writing national guidelines to ensure they are imaged and screened appropriately.

Title: Inclusivity - Transgender

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people experience discrimination. Many report feeling disrespected and belittled in medical environments. This talk will discuss what we need to do to reverse this. They should be offered breast screening at the same frequency as cis-women if they have a similar cancer risk level. NHS numbers are binary. Generally, only those people with numbers linked to being registered female at birth are invited. This means there is a workaround to give access to screening for TGD people registered with their GP as male, if they have cis-female risk levels. TGD people attending breast outpatients should be imaged with mammography and/or ultrasound according to their age, clinical findings, and whether they have had breast surgery.
