Marcus Bateman

Marcus has specialised in the upper limb since 2007. Originally trained at Manchester University, he completed an MSc at the University of Nottingham and also became one of the first physiotherapist independent prescribers in the UK. As well as managing a clinical caseload of patients with acute and chronic shoulder & elbow pathology, Marcus is involved with a broad portfolio of research. He completed a PhD via an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship in 2024, on optimisation of physiotherapy management of lateral elbow tendinopathy. He sat on the Trial Steering Committee of UKFroST investigating MUA vs capsular release vs conservative care of frozen shoulder; and was a Principle Investigator for the SELF Study and GRASP Trials. He and Professor Chris Littlewood designed the RaCeR Trial investigating patient-directed rehabilitation after rotator cuff repair, that is now recruiting to a large national RCT after a successful pilot. He has secured over £2.5million in research funding and has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is an Associate Editor for the Shoulder & Elbow journal and sits on the BESS Research Committee. Marcus has a particular interest in shoulder instability and designed the Derby Shoulder Instability Rehabilitation Programme focussing on patients with atraumatic instability. This work won the best AHP paper prize at the British Elbow & Shoulder Society conference in Glasgow 2018. That year he was also awarded the British Elbow & Shoulder Society’s highly prestigious Copeland Fellowship. Marcus is currently funded by the NIHR’s post-doctoral Development & Skills Enhancement Award to further develop his clinical academic career.
