Lyn was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) in 2002. With the merger of Bristol’s symptomatic and screening services into the Bristol Breast Care Centre at North Bristol in 2013, she decided to focus on breast radiology. She additionally became Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol in 2019.
Since August 2014 she has been developing a research programme to investigate the potential for FAST MRI, a type of shortened Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan of the breast, to be used as a screening tool to detect the most aggressive types of breast cancer as early as possible.
Lyn now leads the FAST MRI programme of research at NBT that initially focussed on developing a training programme for multiprofessional mammogram readers to interpret FAST MRI. Lyn is currently Chief Investigator of the NIHR-funded FAST MRI: DYAMOND study, a multi-centre diagnostic yield study conducted within the NHS breast screening programme, the first UK study to offer FAST MRI to women with average breast density who are at population-risk of developing breast cancer.
Title: Fast MRI: DYAMOND
DYAMOND is a diagnostic yield study within the NHS Breast Screening Programme and forms an important step in the FAST MRI Programme of Research, looking at FAST MRI’s potential, as a screening test, to improve breast cancer outcomes for women.
DYAMOND will count the number of cancers detected by FAST MRI that have been missed by screening mammography for prevalent-round women with average mammographic density (BI-RADS category B) at age 50-52. The research question is whether sufficient additional cancers are detected to justify the inclusion of women with BI-RADS category B in a future cost-effectiveness screening trial of FAST MRI.
