Dr Phil Coates has been a Consultant Radiologist in Plymouth for 13 years. Initially working as an Interventional Radiologist, he made the switch to diagnostic in 2017, and has a subspecialty interest in Uroradiology. He is the Consultant Advisor for Radiology to the RN, and has recently stepped down after 5 years as Military Associate Dean for the South West, working for the Defence Deanery.
He developed an interest in Human Factors and Patient Safety early on in his career, and teaches regularly on HF in a 2 day course. He has taken the conflict resolution aspects of this course and civility saves lives, to work with multiple teams in difficulties, in different healthcare settings, in the NHS, military medical units and in the deployed setting. He has held multiple governance lead roles including Network Governance lead for the Peninsula Trauma Network, and is also a Freedom to Speak up Guardian.
He has an interest in Neurodiversity in Radiology (and has 2 children with ASD), and how to best support colleagues to stay in the workplace who have ASD traits. He talks widely on the subject of Neurodiversity and workplace adaptations and is co-leading a national research project looking into this in the UK Radiology workforce
