Uzoamaka Nkwonta

Uzoamaka Nkwonta (Uzo) is a breast imaging specialist, author, and passionate health equity advocate. With over a decade of experience in mammography and half a decade across the NHS, Uzo brings a unique perspective that blends clinical expertise, lived experience, and community engagement.

She is the author of Silent No More: Breaking the Cultural Silence Around Breast Cancer, a compelling personal memoir and advocacy tool that sheds light on the devastating impact of cultural taboos and delayed diagnosis, especially among Black and ethnic minority women.

In 2024, Uzo was invited to speak at the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) Conference, where she delivered a powerful session on cultural barriers of breast screening to ethnic minority women. She continues this work through her educational programme, “Breaking the Fear: Overcoming Cultural and Emotional Barriers to Breast Screening,” which supports both healthcare providers and underserved communities.

Uzo is the founder of Kindheart Charity Foundation, a Nigerian-registered non-profit, and leads workshops, webinars, and training sessions for organisations such as Breast Cancer Now.

At the heart of her mission is the tragic story of her cousin Nkechi, whose late-stage breast cancer diagnosis due to fear and silence fuels Uzo’s drive to dismantle barriers, empower women, and inspire systems change.

Her work is a call to action—for compassion, cultural competence, and collective responsibility in saving lives.

Bridging the Gap: Tackling Breast Imaging Inequities for Women of Colour

In this deeply personal and data-informed session, Uzoamaka Nkwonta explores the complex web of cultural silence, fear, and racial disparities that continue to shape breast cancer outcomes for women of colour in the UK.

Drawing on both her professional background in mammography and the tragic story of her cousin Nkechi—who delayed seeking care due to stigma and misunderstanding—Uzo offers a powerful narrative that brings humanity to the statistics.

This presentation highlights:
- Key data on breast cancer disparities among ethnic minorities
- Cultural and emotional barriers that prevent early screening and diagnosis
- First-hand reflections from the frontline of NHS breast imaging
- Practical strategies for clinicians to build trust and cultural competence

The session will also introduce Uzo’s community-led initiatives and resources, including the Breast Health Empowerment Pack and her new educational course for healthcare professionals and patients alike.

With a bold and compassionate tone, Uzo challenges attendees to not just see the gaps—but to become part of the solution.
