Richard is a Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry and a specialist in Periodontics at the School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University. He is director of the Dental Clinical Research Facility and research lead for the dental directorate. He is also degree programme director for the MClinDent programme in Periodontics. His research interests involve translational research and clinical trials. His main research focus is tobacco smoking cessation interventions, e-cigarettes and other nicotine products. He completed his PhD on the topic of e-cigarettes in 2018 and has then built up a portfolio of research in this area from laboratory in-vitro studies to clinical trials. He is currently leading the £3M ENHANCE-D trial, the largest clinical trial conducted in this area to date.
