Title

How to Become an Occupational Psychologist: Starting out and Managing Your Trajectory (…when the world has changed abruptly)

Abstract

In 2019, we published a book – How to Become an Occupational Psychologist. It detailed the main challenges and requirements for training as an OP, and included more than a few personal reflections on what it means to be one. Then at the beginning of 2020, of course, the world changed, suddenly and unexpectedly. This change has had a profound effect on the nature of work. We therefore want to think about the implications for the advice we gave in the book, especially around our final chapter, which focused on starting out in the career and managing the trajectory that one takes.
In this session, we will reflect on that advice, and consider where it is still sound, and how and in what ways it may need to change now in the immediate term. We’ll also think about the future and any long-term implications that the present may have on how we start out as OP practitioners in the future.
