FACULTY FOR THE PSYCHOLOGY OF OLDER PEOPLE
VIRTUAL CONFERENCE
21 - 22 JUNE 2021, VIRTUAL CONFERENCE
Bio: Jane Simpson is Professor of the Psychology of Neurodegenerative Conditions at Lancaster University. With colleagues, she has recently published extensive, evidence-based guidance on the psychological therapies which might work best with individuals with Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis. She leads the motor neurodegenerative work within FPOP and sits on other patient and charity bodies associated with improving care for people with these conditions. She has over 120 peer-reviewed publications and holds significant funding from UK and international bodies. She is passionate about the need to improve psychological care for those with neurodegenerative conditions who need it but also to learn from those coping well. From a research perspective she is keen to conduct more studies to assess interventions which work, given the general lack of research in this area, and to understand more about the currently fragmented and unclear pathways to mental health care in the UK experienced by individuals with these conditions.
Professor Jane Simpson, Lancaster University will be launching “Evidence based guidance on psychological interventions for psychological difficulties in individuals with Huntington’s disease Parkinson’s, Motor Neuron Disease and Multiple Sclerosis”. Jane is Professor of the Psychology of Neurodegenerative Conditions. She has been on the FPOP executive for 7 years and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. She is passionate about the need both to develop the evidence base for people with the conditions covered in the guidance and to develop better psychological services.
Evidence-based guidance for working psychologically with people with motor neurodegenerative conditions
This keynote will focus on new BPS guidance which provides psychologists (and other health professionals) with evidence-based recommendations for providing psychological support to individuals living with four motor neurodegenerative conditions: Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis.
Following a review of the current literature the guidance gives evidence of the effectiveness of psychological interventions for each neurodegenerative condition. It also categorises these by type of psychological outcome and by type of psychological intervention.
The review also highlights the lack of accessible psychological/mental health services for many in the UK.
The report concludes that while living with the physical challenges of these conditions is undoubtedly difficult, more support is needed to help the mental health and well-being of the hundreds of thousands of individuals in the UK affected by these conditions.
