Bertram The

Bertram The, MD PhD EBHS is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specializing in upper limb surgery at Amphia Hospital in Breda, the Netherlands, where he leads a nationally recognized center of excellence for complex elbow and forearm pathology. He is a founding member of the Global Elbow Network (GEN) and a European Board of Hand Surgery–accredited hand surgeon, awarded the Best Contender Award in 2018.

Bertram completed fellowships in hand, elbow, and microsurgery in Leuven (Belgium) and upper limb surgery in Perth (Australia). His clinical expertise spans both surgical and conservative management of complex elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand conditions, with a particular interest in innovative treatments for young patients with osteoarthritis—such as mosaicplasty with periosteal autografts and dynamic distraction techniques.

Scientifically, he is a driving force in advancing 3D technologies in orthopaedics, including patient-specific guides and surgical planning tools. He works closely with Erasmus MC Rotterdam, particularly with Prof. Denise Eygendaal, Dr. Anna van der Windt, and 3D innovation expert Drs. Eline van Es. Bertram has (co-)authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications on elbow surgery and biomechanics.

Beyond clinical care and research, he plays a pivotal role in education as Deputy Chief of the orthopaedic residency program at Amphia and is active in national working groups for wrist, hand, shoulder, and elbow surgery. His work also focuses on practical innovation in orthopaedic workflows, including AI applications, outpatient surgery pathways, and task shifting—all aimed at delivering smarter, more patient-centered care.
