Hamric’s Model of Advanced Practice Nursing: Its Foundation and Future

The Hamric Model of Advanced Practice Nursing was originally developed in 1996 and was based on early conceptual work of the clinical nurse specialist role in the United States.  Hamric proposed the model from an integrative perspective of advanced practice nursing from all specialties with an emphasis on essential primary criteria and core competencies.  While the Hamric model has evolved over time, reflecting the dynamic nature of advanced practice nursing in meeting the needs of patients as well as incorporating evidence from research and theoretical perspectives, the fundamental features of the model have remained relatively constant.  This session will review the development and core features of the Hamric model and discuss its current and potential future impact globally.
