WELCOME TO THE NORTH WEST DIVISION OF COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY WEBINAR

In keeping with the central dynamic of trauma as described by Herman (1992), a core conflict when attempting to work psychologically with racism is between the drive to tell the truth and the wish to deny the reality of it. In the end, the direction taken is usually determined by who has most power. Perhaps for that reason, little progress has been made with regard to developing psychological theories and practice for working psychologically with racism and its impacts. After all, the psychological therapies retain strong white power bases and arguably, practitioners are more likely to pathologize those oppressed and even traumatised by structural racism than they are to validate their experiences or bear witness.

This seminar will focus on the tension between truth and denial in regard to racism, asking why there might be such a force to deny, erase and silence the voices of its victims. Importantly, this space offers an opportunity to think together about how psychological therapies might. Dr Anne Aiyegbusi will explore the dynamic of truth vs denial, starting from the racist conceptualisation of ‘race’ and the history behind it, and working toward the present day where we see a real time social shift with the Black Lives Matter movement raising awareness of racism in a way we may have not seen before in our lifetimes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Attendees will learn to critically reflect upon how equipped psychological therapies are in working with the trauma that is experienced as a consequence of racism.
