Biography

Dr Stacy Clemes has an undergraduate degree and PhD in Human Biology from Loughborough University. Following the completion of her PhD in 2004, Stacy was employed as a Research Associate in the Department of Human Sciences at Loughborough University where she started to lead research in physical activity and health, she became a lecturer in Human Biology within this department in 2007. In 2009 Stacy moved to the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences within Loughborough, she was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013 and to Reader in Active Living and Public Health in 2017.

She has recently led two NIHR Public Health Research funded studies, one examining the impact of sit-to-stand desks in primary school classrooms (Stand Out in Class), and the other examining the impact of a multicomponent lifestyle health behaviour intervention in long distance heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers (The SHIFT Study). Stacy is currently leading a new programme of research exploring the behavioural and mental and physical health impacts of remote working.

In 2018/19 Stacy was part of the Sedentary Behaviour Expert Working Group for the 2019 UK Chief Medical Officers’ Physical Activity Guidelines review. Within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, she is currently the Director of Doctoral Programmes.

Presentation: A Structured Health Intervention For Truckers (SHIFT) – implementation and evaluation of a behaviour change programme in an at-risk and hard to reach occupational group

Long distance heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers’ working environment provides limited opportunities for a healthy lifestyle with unhealthy lifestyle behaviours prevalent in this occupational group. Consequently, HGV drivers exhibit higher than nationally representative rates of obesity, and obesity-related co-morbidities, and are underserved in terms of health promotion initiatives. In this keynote, Stacy will describe the development, implementation and evaluation of the ‘Structured Health Intervention For Truckers (SHIFT)’ – a multicomponent, theory driven, health behaviour intervention designed to promote positive lifestyle changes in relation to physical activity, diet, and sitting in HGV drivers. She will also provide an overview of the challenges faced with implementing and evaluating a public-health focused trial within this hard to reach, and at-risk, occupational group.
