Dr Ibrahim Akubat FBASES

Ibrahim is the current chair of the sport and performance division and BASES board member. He previously served for 4 years as CPD rep for the division organising a number of high-profile events for the membership. He has been a member of the academic team at Newman University, Birmingham for the last 10 years combining this with various consultancy and research roles in elite sport as well as institutional responsibility for post-graduate research. His primary research interest is examining the dose-response relationship between training and the outcomes of training in sports such as soccer, rugby, road cycling, hurling and gaelic football.

Dr Neil Gibson FBASES 

Neil was accredited in 2004 and awarded HPSA status in 2010 having held positions on the accreditation committee and editorial board for TSES.  During this time he has worked as a Sport and Exercise Scientist in professional football, supported athletes across two Commonwealth game cycles and held consultancy roles with the Scottish Football Association, GB Water Polo and the English Football Association.  In addition to his applied work, Neil has supervised postgraduate research students and developed postgraduate taught courses at two institutions in the areas of Strength & Conditioning and Management and Leadership in Sport.  Recently he oversaw the design and development of Scotland’s National Performance Centre for Sport and is currently Project Director for a new research, education and health precinct in Sydney, Australia.

Dr Denise Hill FBASES 

Denise is a Senior Lecturer of Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology at Swansea University. She has been a professional member of BASES (psychology support) for over 20 years and has been highly involved with the BASES community during that time. She has acted as a BASES SE reviewer and supervisor, and has presented her work at a number of BASES annual conferences, division days, workshops and webinars. She has contributed to The Sport and Exercise Scientist (It’s no choke. Long term consequences of choking) and has co-authored a BASES Expert Statement (Psychological considerations for injury risk reduction in competitive sports). More recently, she acted as a member of the BASES Accreditation committee (2015-2020) as well as the Psychology Division CPD representative (2018-2020). She is now the Psychology Division Deputy Chair, where she is leading the development of the BASES-SEPAR MSc. Endorsement programme (PSES). Finally, she has just completed SEPAR (APEC, 2020-2021), and has become a HCPC registered Psychology Practitioner through this route. 

Dr Paul A. Jones FBASES, BASES Accredited, CSCS*D, CSci

Paul is a Lecturer in Sports Biomechanics/ Strength and Conditioning (S&C) at the University of Salford. Paul earned a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Sports Science from Liverpool John Moores University and a PhD in Sports Biomechanics at the University of Salford. He has over 20 years’ experience in Biomechanics and S&C support to athletes and teams, primarily in athletics, football and rugby and was a former sports science co-ordinator for UK disability athletics. He has been BASES Accredited for over 15 years and is currently a member of the BASES accreditation committee. He has authored/ co-authored over 100 peer reviewed journal articles mainly in change of direction biomechanics and strength diagnostics and has co-edited a book ‘Performance Assessment in Strength and Conditioning’ by Routledge.

Dr Neil Maxwell FBASES

Neil Maxwell, University of Brighton, has been a Professional Member of BASES since 1997, during which time he has contributed to many BASES-related activities from co-authoring position stands, expert statements and research articles in the Journal of Sport Sciences to supporting the career development of students by presenting at BASES Annual and Student Conferences. He joined the COVID-19 Special Interest Group Steering Committee, responding to a number of parliamentary select committee inquiries on behalf of BASES and is now a member of the Public and External Affairs Advisory Panel. Through his teaching, research and innovation, he aims to inspire health, occupational and sporting communities to engage in safe and effective exercise in environmental extremes and reduce the incidence of illness.

Dr Jonathan Sinclair FBASES

Jonathan is a Reader in Sport, Exercise & Nutritional Sciences from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). He has been a BASES accredited sport & exercise scientist for 9 years and served as program leader for both the MSc in Sport & Exercise Sciences and the MSc Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at UCLan. He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy as well as a Chartered Statistician with the Royal Statistical Society and his research interest's area around the clinical aspects of sports biomechanics.

Dr Alun Williams FBASES

Alun has worked as an academic in the UK since 1999, and since 2003 at Manchester Metropolitan University.  He has supervised 15 research students to successful completion and taught thousands of sport and exercise science students.  He has published >100 peer-reviewed journal articles, attracted research funding of ~£1M from sources including the IOC, The Royal Society and the EU to support sport and exercise science research, and served as Independent Expert Witness at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).  He was formerly Convenor of the BASES Molecular Exercise Physiology Interest Group, has published a BASES Position Stand and three BASES Expert Statements, and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Sports Sciences.
