Hayley Gullen
Hayley Gullen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, aged 37. She’s recovered now, but life will never be the same again. Her need to express herself throughout cancer treatment led to the rediscovery of a lifelong interest: cartooning. Her graphic memoir, "This Might Surprise You: A Breast Cancer Story" was published by Bloomsbury Green Tree in 2025.

Title: This might surprise you: patient perspective
Despite the best intentions of all involved, cancer treatment is an intensely dehumanising experience. Hayley Gullen's talk will describe how she sought to express herself and connect with her medical team through the medium of cartoons, and how this led to the publication of her graphic memoir. She will share suggestions for how radiologists can help patients feel more human and cared for at an intensely vulnerable time.
