Dr Dawn Albertson

Dawn leads the Psychology department at Bath Spa University. As a Psychology undergraduate, Dawn conducted research in a psychopharmacology lab and went on to pursue a Cellular and Clinical Neurobiology PhD, studying illicit drug-induced gene expression alterations in human post-mortem brain. She is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Institute for the Scholarship of Assessment, Teaching, and Learning. Her interests are vast and include teaching and learning, higher education management, science communication, and widening university participation to systemically marginalized groups. She currently supervises doctoral students in the Higher Education Management DBA in the University of Bath School of Management, is Consultant Editor International for the journal Teaching of Psychology, and serves as Chair of the International Relations Committee for the American Psychological Association's Division 2: the Society for the Teaching of Psychology.

Dawn also co-authors the monthly Kaleidoscope column with Professor Sukhi Shergill, Dr Derek Tracy, and Dr Dan Joyce in The British Journal of Psychiatry (BJPsych). The column covers developments in mental health and neuroscience from around the world which you can read here. They also deliver a monthly mental health research highlights webinar called Kaleidoscope Live! in association with Maudsley Learning.


Dr Phil Banyard

Phil Banyard is Associate Professor in Psychology and is currently Head of Department. The Department of Psychology has over 100 staff including over 80 lecturing staff. These staff are responsible for over 1,500 undergraduate students and over 200 taught postgraduate students. In addition, the Department is supervising over 70 PhDs.

The Department of Psychology is a consistent high performer in the National Student Survey and it places a lot of emphasis on enhancing the student experience. Alongside this, the Department performs well in research evaluations such as the REF.

Phil Banyard is responsible for maintaining and further improving the performance of this outstanding team of psychologists.

His research activity focuses on education. For the last 15 years he has been a leading member of projects studying the impact of digital technologies in schools. This work attracted grants in excess of £1,000,000 from government agencies and the European Commission. He continues to publish on this topic.

Another area of work has been the development of A-Level Psychology in the school sector and its impact on the character of the subject. Phil Banyard's 30 year involvement with schools examinations facilitates a combination of practice and research.

Other research activity includes publications on health information and the promotion of healthy behaviours, and also the benefits of narrative in training programmes.
