National Lead for Psychological Professions across NHS England and Health Education England
Dr. Adrian Whittington is National Lead for Psychological Professions across NHS England and Health Education England. Adrian has held previous roles as Director of Psychology and Psychological Therapies, and Director of Education, both at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Before this Adrian set up and delivered IAPT training programmes at Canterbury Christ Church University, building on a clinical background in adult mental health and learning disability services.
Adrian is driven by a commitment to extend psychological healthcare to make it accessible to far more of those who could benefit, and to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage in the psychological professions workforce.
'Building a Caring Work Culture – Working Together to Make Change Happen'
Adrian will explore the intersection between the recommendations of the BPS DCP Discussion Paper and the vision and actions being undertaken within the national Arm’s Length Bodies in England. He will argue that change will be maximised if we can all work together across the system.
Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant
Dr. Amra Saleem Rao (BA. MSc, D.Clin Psych, AFBPsS, MA Organisational Consultation) is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant.
She has worked in the NHS and other mental health services sector for over 30 years in UK & abroad. She has led and managed Psychological Services in NHS in various roles throughout her career and have been involved in setting out leadership, coaching & career development programs in UK, Europe, South Asia & Saudi Arabia.
She is the co-lead for the British Psychological Society (BPS) - Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) Faculties Network, the former chair of BPS Leadership & Management Faculty ( 2016-2020) and is an executive committee member of Division of Clinical Psychology. She co-chairs a National Psychological Professionals Wellbeing Programme and has a lead role in DCP Supporting Future Leaders Programme. She has contributed to the BPS Document on Psychological Needs of Healthcare Staff. She is the Director of Psychological Horizons - Psychological Therapies & Organisational Consultancy based in the West End of London. She is attached with various educational institutes and training programs nationally and internationally with a particular focus on leadership development, career coaching, group relations, social identities and racial & social disparities.
Besides her training in clinical psychology, psychotherapy and organisational work, she is also an experienced trainer, supervisor and therapist in a range of brief evidence- based psychological interventions such as CBT, Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT), Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) and Compassion /Mindfulness Based Approaches. She has led the development of DIT with complex presentations with the model originators (http://www.d-i-t.org).
As the lead author of Building a Caring Work Culture and the co-chair of the National Psychological Professional Wellbeing Programme, she has coordinated the webinar with the project steering group.

Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Director of AHPs & Psychological Services
Esther has worked in Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne & Wear FT (CNTW) and predecessor organisations since 1993, and has worked in a series of leadership and management roles since 1996. Esther became Clinical Director of Psychological Services in 2010, and has been Director of AHPs & Psychological Services since October 2017.
Esther is currently a Trustee of the British Psychological Society and has served twice as Chair of the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP), in 2016-17 and 2019- 2 March 2021. She is now DCP Vice Chair. Esther is also BPS Co-Chair of the APPTS (BPS & Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Accreditation Programme for Psychological Therapies Services) Board. Other recent national roles have included BPS representative on the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health & NHS Long Term Plan Independent Oversight & Advisory Group, and BPS representative on the National Clinical Audit for Anxiety & Depression spotlight audit.
Esther has also served as Chair of the DCP Leadership & Management Faculty in 2014 -16 and is a former member of the Faculty’s steering group for staff wellbeing.
Esther’s clinical field is in the non-psychosis pathway, with a special interest in Eating Disorders. She has provided training in this field nationally and internationally. Esther is a passionate advocate of co-production with Experts by Experience. She also enjoys gardening and (when permitted) singing and performing on the amateur stage!
Consultant Clinical Psychologist
Dr. Idit Albert is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and PTSD Lead at South London and Maudsley where she has been leading the Psychological Trauma Outreach, Screen and Support Services for survivors of terrorist incidents in the UK and oversea since 2015.
Idit is a joint Clinical Lead at NHS England and Improvement for psychological support for NHS and social care workforce as part of the response to the Covid pandemic. During the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone she led a Psychological Support programme on behalf of DfID for UK medics working in the Ebola treatment centres.
Idit worked on international projects for survivors of human trafficking and military veterans with the International Organisation for Migration (Geneva). She holds the position of Academic Director for the Doctorate programme in Clinical Psychology at the IoPPN, King’s College University. Idit is a CBT therapist and clinical supervisor.
Adrian is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Employee Wellbeing for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He was lead author on the BPS document Impact of COVID-19 on Psychologists. He is the former Chair of the DCP Leadership and Management Faculty and the former chair of DCP Wales.
'Workplace Wellbeing in Wales – Perspectives from across the Public Sector'
Adrian will summarise the position of workforce wellbeing in NHS Wales, and speak from his local healthboard perspective. Julie then follows with insights from working in intensive care, and scaling this up to a national project in the pandemic.
Julie is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Critical Care and the Lead for the Critical Care and Major Trauma Psychology team in Cardiff. She is also the National Wellbeing Project Director for the Intensive Care Society. She was lead author on the BPS Document Psychological Needs of Healthcare Staff. She is the former Secretary for DCP Wales.

Dr Louise Cumbley is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Director of Psychology for NHS Dumfries and Galloway. She is also professional lead for Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership and local Staff Wellbeing Champion.
She advocates strongly for staff wellbeing and dedicate staff support services and is passionate about cultural, team and individual approaches to staff support both locally and nationally. She is a member of the Heads of Psychology Scotland and has been offering advice to Scottish Government in relation to staff wellbeing services during Covid-19.
Whilst she works clinically with Children and Young people, particularly those Looked after children or in child protection, her work is predominantly with parents to reduce intergenerational transmission of trauma. The application of trauma-informed care to staff within Health and Social Care is her current focus.
'The HOPS response to Covid-19 pandemic in Scotland: impact on staff wellbeing'
Heads of Psychology Scotland (HOPS) offered a co-ordinated national response to Covid-19 ensuring that psychologically informed care was offered to staff across Health and Social Care. Working closely with Scottish Government, HOPS ensured that funding for support across all levels was available to staff and continue to work on this as we move towards recovery and remobilisation.
Professor Shirley Reynolds is currently Senior Clinical Advisor at the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapy (BABCP). She is a clinical psychologist and active in clinical training and research. Her research is focused on understanding and developing treatment for adolescents with depression. From 2012 to 2019 she was Director of the Charlie Waller Institute at Reading University.
Before then she was Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia and worked as a clinical researcher for the Medical Research Council at the University of Sheffield. Shirley was President of the of the BABCP from 2010 to 2012. Shirley is a Co-Director of CBTReach Ltd, an organisation that provides online training in CBT.
