PANEL DISCUSSION

Barbara Hibbert

I was first diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, which had metastasized to the liver, in 2014. Since then I have had three lots of major surgery, gone through all the standard of care chemotherapy, been declared cured twice, and given 6-9 months to live three times. It’s been a rollercoaster!

I’m now on a phase 1 clinical trial at the Christie, in Manchester, and although it’s early days, things are going well so far. When I was first diagnosed, at the age of 57, the odds on surviving five years were less than 10%. At one point I thought I might not see my granddaughter born, but she is about to start school in September.

I continue to work, although not as much as I used to, on various projects related to history teaching. I am also involved with work as a patient representative and volunteer with various projects related to cancer and end-of-life care, including Bowel Cancer UK, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Bowel Cancer Intelligence UK and BCIP. I am keen to provide a voice for those, like me, who are living well with a dire prognosis. I’m fitter than I’ve ever been, through losing three stone or so (although the weight crept back on a bit during lockdown) taking more exercise, and cutting my drinking dramatically.
