Kevin Browne

Professor Kevin Browne is a HCPC registered forensic psychology practitioner and BPS Chartered Forensic Psychologist. He has held academic posts at the University of Surrey, Leicester, Birmingham and Liverpool before being appointed as Director of the Centre for Forensic and Family Psychology at the at the University of Nottingham Medical School, where he heads a team of five forensic psychologists and two administrators running Stage 1 (MSc) and Stage 2 (D.Foren.Psy) professional training in Forensic Psychology.  His research interests have been influenced by his practice experience working with young offenders. These are the development of mental health problems, anti-social personality disorders and criminal behaviour in children and young people as a consequence of childhood maltreatment. He launched the Wiley Journal ‘Child Abuse Review’ which he co-edited for 10 years (1992 to 2002). He has acted as expert consultant to the European Commission, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation on children in adversity, following 12 years as an executive of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN). He has worked in more than 50 countries worldwide to improve the care and protection of children and was involved in the prevention of child abandonment and the deinstitutionalisation (DI) of thousands of children in Europe. His most recent project is the prevention of harm to unaccompanied children crossing the Turkish/Greek Boarders in collaboration with the Institute of Child Health in Athens. Currently, he is a registered consultant on childcare and protection to UNICEF Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia and is a member of the Lords and Commons Family and Child Protection Group (LCFCPG) at Westminster. He has given expert testimony to UK Government select committees on effects of media violence and pornography, knife crime, child trafficking, and child poverty and to the Netherlands Government special committee on Sexual Abuse of children. In 2019, he was the recipient of the BPS Research Excellence in Forensic Psychology Award.
