Akin Cil

Akin Cil is the Rex L. Diveley Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Missouri–Kansas City and an orthopaedic surgeon with University Health Physicians. He also leads UMKC’s Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Medicine Division. His clinical practice focuses on shoulder and elbow surgery, with particular expertise in complex elbow reconstruction, instability, stiffness, trauma, and arthroplasty.

Dr. Cil earned his medical degree and completed his orthopaedic residency at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. He subsequently completed fellowship training in upper-extremity reconstruction at Mayo Clinic, and sports medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston–Harvard Medical School. He also holds an Executive MBA from the University of Missouri–Kansas City.

An active clinician, educator, and investigator, Dr. Cil has published extensively on elbow biomechanics, instability and reconstruction, elbow and shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff surgery, medical-device safety, and health policy. His work includes computational modeling of the elbow and multicenter clinical research. He has trained and mentored residents, fellows, medical students, and engineering researchers, and has served as faculty for numerous national and international shoulder and elbow courses.

Dr. Cil serves as President and Board Chair of the Global Elbow Network Foundation and as Chair of the Global Elbow Network Industry Relations Committee. He has also served on GEN’s Finance and Bylaws committees. Within the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, he chairs the Multicenter Study Groups Committee and serves on the Research Committee and Elbow Multicenter Study Committee. His broader leadership has included service as President of the Missouri State Orthopaedic Association and as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Councilors.
