This prestigious annual award honors individuals who embody the spirit of Dr. Clara Wong demonstrating exceptional skill, creativity, and dedication while advancing the field of elbow surgery. The award recognizes innovative contributions in elbow science, patient care, education, imaging, surgical techniques, and emerging technologies, reflecting Clara’s visionary outlook.

About Dr. Clara Wong

Dr. Clara Wong was a committed Orthopaedic Surgeon from Hong Kong and a foundational leader of the Global Elbow Network (GEN). As the inaugural Chair of the imagine GEN (iGEN) Committee, she championed creativity, interactivity, and forward‑thinking approaches to elbow education and collaboration. Her compassion reached far beyond her home in Hong Kong to provinces across China such as Hunan, Xinjiang, and Sichuan. She also left a legacy felt across continents through her humanitarian work with Médecins Sans Frontières in Afghanistan and Haiti. Despite facing a major medical illness, Clara remained passionately dedicated to GEN until her passing on 26 February 2026. This award honors her legacy of innovation, resilience, and generosity.

Criteria for Selection

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in at least one of the following areas, with clear evidence of impact:

1. Innovation

•           Development of new techniques, technologies, or approaches in elbow surgery

•           Creative solutions that improve patient outcomes in elbow pathology.

2. Service to the GEN Community

•           Leadership, collaboration, or contributions that strengthen GEN’s mission

Most importantly, nominees must demonstrate how their work has made a measurable difference and reflect the mission and vision of GEN.

Application Requirements

Nominations must be submitted by another GEN member; members may not nominate themselves. This process is designed to support and recognize fellow GEN members who exemplify the aspects that the Clara Wong Award represents

The nominator must submit all items together via the nomination link:

1. Letter of Recommendation (max 250 words)

Written by a GEN member, describing:

•           Why the nominee is deserving

•           Their contributions to innovation

•           Their service to the GEN community

2. Candidate’s Curriculum Vitae (max 400 words)

Must include:

•           Email and country of practice

•           Confirmation that they agree to be nominated

•           Confirm they will attend the GEN Annual Scientific Meeting to accept the award if selected

3. Candidate Photo that they agree to potentially be published

4. Statement of Innovation (max 400 words)


Provided by the nominee, describing:

  • Their service to the GEN community- Their statement should include:
  • Why their work is important
  • Evidence of impact (patients, research, education, technology, etc.)
  • How their work reflects the spirit of Dr. Clara Wong

Submission Details

•           Upload required documents and fill out information at GEN-Conference.net

•           Deadline: One month before the Annual Scientific Meeting

•           Late applications will not be accepted

•           Applicants must attend the GEN Annual Meeting

Selection Process

•           The Executive Board will appoint an Awards’ Committee

•           The committee will review all complete applications and select the most appropriate candidate

•           If no suitable candidate is identified, the Executive Board may submit a nomination for consideration

Award Presentation

The Clara Wong Innovation Award will be presented during the Awards Ceremony at the GEN Annual Meeting. This moment serves not only to honor the selected recipient, but also to celebrate the visionary spirit that Clara brought to GEN.

During the ceremony, the awardee will be recognized before the global GEN community for their outstanding contributions to innovation in elbow surgery. A brief tribute to Dr. Clara Wong will precede the presentation, highlighting her leadership, creativity, and enduring impact on GEN and the broader Orthopaedic / elbow community.

The recipient will be invited to the stage to receive:

  • A commemorative award

It will be at the discretion of the board, as to how this award and ceremony will be presented, including:

·       The type of acknowledgement that will be provided

·       If there is a monetary value, and from where this money is obtained

·       If the recipient is to provide a presentation in Clara’s honor

This ceremony stands as a meaningful moment of inspiration within the Annual Meeting — a reminder of Clara’s legacy and a celebration of the innovative spirit she championed.
