Irish Landscape Institute Webinar:
Multifunction Landscapes: Design to Management

Foreword by Merrick Denton-Thompson

The landscapes we most treasure are bi-products of function, designed landscapes associated with a capital event touch a tiny proportion of the surface area of our great country. All our landscapes are in crisis, with humanity itself threatened, because of the way we have managed natural systems. As a profession we transform places, uniquely integrating our science and art based skills to meet tomorrow’s agenda.

We take the long view, not constrained by short term politics or short term economics. Everything we do is in the public interest. We will drive the re-purposing of our urban infrastructure at the same time as reconnecting towns with the countryside. Today there is a powerful new imperative to reverse the processes driving climate change, to restore the quality of Natural Capital (elements of life – our pallet), to re-instate biological diversity, to secure resilience and to empower the transformation of the health and wellbeing of us all.

I suggest our skills are needed to secure the appropriate management of land and natural resources as much, or more, for the delivery of individual designs associated with one-off events. Imagination and a creative mind are important ingredients to successfully delivering the multi-functional landscapes for our future.
