Call for Contributions

The Language World Call for Contributions has now closed, thank you to everyone who submitted this year.

Language World is the annual conference and CPD event of the Association for Language Learning. It is a highlight of the year for languages education and attracts hundreds of participants a day from across all educational sectors, with a large number coming from primary and secondary schools.

The theme of Language World 2022 is Language learning for social justice.

Contributions

We are now constructing the programme for the 2023 event as we review contributions for talks and workshops which cover the areas below. Proposals which include examples from current innovative practice in all sectors, and the principles that underpin them, were especially welcome, as are hands-on workshops of a practical nature. Contributions were also welcome from teachers and specialists in languages education both in the UK and from overseas.

Focus for talk and workshop sessions

We were specifically interested in submissions for talks and workshops which focus on the following areas with precedence being given to new and topical submissions:

 Language learning for social justice:

  • Social justice and equity in languages education
  • The importance of languages and shifting from a monolingual mindset in UK educational establishments
  • Inclusive and effective languages provision in primary through to secondary schools
  • Promoting the importance of extra-curricular activities, clubs and events to enrich language learning  
  • Promoting and ensuring languages for all pupils across the Key Stages (KS2, KS3, KS4, KS5-HE) 
  • Planning for accessibility for all pupils in language learning
  • Celebrating multilingualism in schools through the teaching and accreditation of community languages 
  • Effective EAL provision in primary and secondary language lessons 
  • Closing the gap (in languages) for all learners  
  • Addressing diversity in the languages classroom
  • Planning for progression and transition for all learners
  • Motivating learners to continue beyond GCSE 
  • Innovative pedagogies (including e-learning) to promote social justice 
  • Promoting interculturalism through authentic texts, film, literature and songs (in the languages classroom)
  • Cultural capital and social justice

            Call for Contributions Guidelines 

Presentation Formats

  • Workshop - Allocated 45 minutes in the programme: 30 minutes presentation and 15 minutes for Q&A
  • Oral Presentation - Allocated 45 minutes in the programme: 30 minutes presentation and 15 minutes for Q&A 
  • Short Oral Presentation - Allocated 10 minutes in the programme: 8 minutes presentation and 2 minutes for Q&A

Speaker Bookings and Attendance

Once the review process is complete all accepted speakers will need to book to attend the conference. We are able to offer the following reduced rates for one speaker for each accepted presentation:

  • Speaking day attendance only; £66 (inc vat)
  • Two days Conference attendance £150 (inc vat)

(Excludes accommodation and dinner)

Please note we have no intention, at this time, to offer virtual presentations, the event will take place in person at the Quays Hotel, Sheffield.

Additional speakers are expected to register and pay as Language World delegates at the relevant delegate attendance rate. Unfortunately our funds do not permit us to cover any expenses for speakers.
