Richard Meddings CBE - Immediate past-Chair of NHS England and Chair-elect of Breast Cancer Now

Richard Meddings chaired the Board of NHS England from March 2022- March 2025. He also served in this time as a non executive on the Board of Genomics England. Under his chairmanship, NHS England incorporated NHS Improvement, NHS Digital and Health Education England, it saw significant head office headcount reduction, rolled out the 42 ICB’s, established the Fuller review of primary care, saw investment in technology in the App, in the Federated Data Platform, in primary care digital telephony and in ambient technology. Additionally, his period in office saw the first ever 10 year workforce plan, a roll out of over 12,000 virtual ward beds, significant uplift in genomics activity and advances in, inter alia, cancer treatments.

Richard is currently the Chair Elect of Breast Cancer Now and has recently been appointed as Chair of Birmingham Health Partners.From 2002-2014 Richard was a Group Executive Director of Standard Chartered and Group Finance Director for eight years. He has in the past been Chair of TSB Bank, served for 7 years on the Board of HM Treasury, and was variously a non executive director on the Boards of Credit Suisse, Legal & General, 3i Group, Jardine Lloyd Thompson and Deutsche Bank.

From 2004-2014 Richard was Chair of Seeing is Believing, a charity focused on avoidable blindness. He was a trustee and deputy chair of TeachFirst from 2016-2022 and on behalf of the Department of Education he chaired for four years the Hastings Opportunity Area.

A chartered Accountant, Richard was a pupil at Wolverhampton Grammar School, read modern History at Exeter College, Oxford, where he is now an Honorary Fellow. He was in 2022 awarded the CBE for his contribution to Financial Services.
