Dr Caroline Miller is a Specialist Physiotherapist in Upper Limb Rehabilitation at University Hospitals Birmingham, working within one of the UK’s busiest Major Trauma Centres. She has over a decade of experience in the assessment, rehabilitation, and long‑term management of adults with complex traumatic upper limb injuries, including complex regional pain syndrome, brachial plexus injury, nerve trauma, multi‑structure injuries, and post‑operative reconstruction.
Alongside her clinical role, Caroline holds an NIHR post‑doctoral award (Senior Clinical Research Practitioner) and is an active researcher focusing on rehabilitation outcomes after traumatic upper limb injury. As Chief or Co‑Investigator on NIHR, charity and data‑driven studies and fellowships, she has secured over £3 million in funding for rehabilitation research. Her work spans patient‑reported outcome measures, digital rehabilitation pathways, implementation of remote monitoring systems, and co‑designed interventions to support recovery after nerve injury. She has hosted national priority‑setting work, including the James Lind Alliance PSP for traumatic brachial plexus injury, and collaborates widely across surgical, therapy, charity and academic teams.
Caroline has a particular clinical and research interest in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), especially in the context of trauma and nerve injury. She is committed to improving early recognition, multidisciplinary management, and long‑term functional outcomes for people living with CRPS. Passionate about advancing AHP research capacity, she co‑chairs the West Midlands Community of Allied Health Professionals in Research (CAHPR) and sits on the executive committee of the Association of Trauma and Orthopaedic Physiotherapists (ATOCP), creating opportunities for clinicians to engage in research.
