Elizabeth Caller

I have worked as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS since 2006.  My doctoral training in Clinical Psychology was at the University of East Anglia.  I worked in Community Learning Disability services for around 12 years and completed a CLAHRC Fellowship regarding interagency work with parents with learning disabilities.  I have also worked in Older People's Mental Health and Memory Assessment Services, and Autism Assessment services. I have been part of the Cambridge University Hospitals Lysosomal Disorders Unit since 2018, developing the role of psychology in this service.  This involves elements such as input into MDT working, therapeutic work with patients both individually and in groups, neuropsychological assessment, and supporting the team in taking a psychologically informed approach to patient care.

Metabolic psychology across the lifespan

There is increasing recognition of the impact of Inherited Metabolic Disorders on mental health and cognitive functioning across the lifespan, and psychology provision is developing within Inherited Metabolic Disorder services. This presentation will give some context to the rationale for psychology input in IMDs, including outlines of general and condition-specific guidance about psychological assessment and treatment.  We will discuss the results of a recent survey of psychology provision in paediatric and adult IMD services across the country.  We will describe the range of elements of psychology input to IMD teams, including the differing roles of clinical and neuropsychologists, and will provide case illustrations to demonstrate the common psychosocial challenges faced by IMD patients at different periods across the lifespan.
