Katie Redwood
I have worked in the NHS since 2007. I completed my doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at the University of Southampton in 2015. I have both pre and post qualified experience of working in physical health settings in both paediatric and adult services within the NHS (including Oncology and Haematology, Palliative Care, Intensive Care, Cystic Fibrosis, Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Metabolic). I have worked in the South West Paediatric Metabolic Psychology Service based in Bristol Children’s Hospital since 2020, developing the role of psychology in this service. This involves elements such as input into MDT working, working therapeutically with children, young people and their families, neuropsychological assessment, research audit and service development, delivering teaching and training and supporting the team in taking a psychologically informed approach to patient care.
Metabolic psychology across the lifespan
There is increasing recognition of the impact of Inherited Metabolic Disorders on mental health and cognitive functioning across the lifespan, and psychology provision is developing within Inherited Metabolic Disorder services. This presentation will give some context to the rationale for psychology input in IMDs, including outlines of general and condition-specific guidance about psychological assessment and treatment. We will discuss the results of a recent survey of psychology provision in paediatric and adult IMD services across the country. We will describe the range of elements of psychology input to IMD teams, including the differing roles of clinical and neuropsychologists, and will provide case illustrations to demonstrate the common psychosocial challenges faced by IMD patients at different periods across the lifespan.
