Professor Kim Bower 
ALL President (2020-2022)

Kim is a principal lecturer at the Sheffield Institute of Education, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a National Teaching Fellow. She is an experienced lecturer and researcher in the field of languages and teacher education and an expert in CLIL.

Her career as an initial teacher trainer started in 2000 at Hull University. Prior to this, Kim taught French and German for 16 years leading exchanges and residential visits as well as a number of national curriculum projects. 

In her current role she has established a community of academics and practitioners of CLIL in Anglophone countries and is the conference chair of the Biennial International CLIL conferences hosted in June 2017 and June 2019 at Sheffield Institute of Education.


Professor Do Coyle

Do is Professor of Languages Education and Classroom Learning at university of  Edinburgh and an international expert in the field of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning).  She gained worldwide acclaim through her drive to enable teachers and their learners to have confidence in developing conditions for deeper learning and especially in ensuring that learning is spatially designed, cognitively challenging - built on linguistic progression - and is interculturally connected. At the University of Aberdeen (2008-2017), her work as a founder member of the Graz Group involved a transnational research team, funded by the ECML. The Graz Group is currently developing a PluriLiteracies approach to Teaching for Deeper Learning (PTDL) and is constantly exploring ways of achieving sustainable deeper learning across languages and contexts.



Jane Driver

Jane Driver is Deputy Principal at Queen Katharine Academy in Peterborough, where she teaches Spanish, German and English as an Additional Language (EAL).  Jane is a Specialist Leader in Education for Modern Foreign Languages and a volunteer for the Association for Language Learning, coordinating the ALL Peterborough Hub.  Jane has created the award-winning national Foreign Language Spelling Bee project as well as developing the Translation and Primary Bees and delivering training and presentations on language teaching and pedagogy as well as bilingual education and learners.



Dr Marie Petersen

Marie has had over 30 years experience teaching Italian at both the primary and secondary level. Marie completed her studies at the University of Melbourne. Her doctoral thesis was in the area of teacher professional learning. In 1992 she completed a “Certificato Di Frequenza” at the Istituto Di Lingua e Cultura Italiana Michelangelo in Florence, Italy. She is currently a practicing Italian teacher at Coburg West Primary School in Melbourne, Australia.  Marie has also taught English, History, Religious Education and Classical Civilization at the secondary school level up to the equivalent of A-levels.  

Marie is a leading CLIL practitioner who has successfully developed and implemented CLIL programs at her current school. She has also presented her work in CLIL at the Victorian Association of Teachers of Italian Conferences and other National Languages Conferences. Marie has collaborated with A/Prof. Russell Cross at the University of Melbourne in promoting CLIL in schools in Victoria and supporting practising teachers who are undertaking Melbourne Graduate School of Education Studies in CLIL.  



Michael Wardle

Michael Wardle is one of her majesty’s inspectors and subject lead for languages for Ofsted. Before working with Ofsted, he was headteacher at a large, successful 11-18 school in Durham city, which had previously been designated a language college. Prior to headship, he held a variety of positions including officer for modern languages in Durham LA. In the past he coordinated CPD across the North-east of England under the banner of Comenius (an outreach arm for the then CILT, the National Centre for Languages), and wrote training materials for CILT on primary upskilling and vocational programmes 16-19. He has authored German and French textbooks, acted as editor for ALL French language journal Francophonie and more recently advised the Department for Education around some of the practicalities around staffing MFL for the English Baccalaureate as ‘policy fellow’.

Michael inspected schools for over ten years while working in schools, and has experience working with primary, secondary, special schools of all types, and alternative provisions, including PRUs. He also leads local area SEND inspections. Michael holds a doctorate in education. 


Professor Li Wei

Li Wei is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London. His work covers various aspects of bilingualism and multilingualism, with a particular focus on language development of bilingual children. He is Editor of the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, and Applied Linguistics Review. He was previously Head of School of Education at Newcastle University, Pro-Vice-Master at Birkbeck, University of London, and Chair of the University Council of General and Applied Linguistics. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
