Scientific Programme Committee

Fiona Gillison

Fiona Gillison is a Chartered (Health) Psychologist and Professor in Health Psychology at the University of Bath. Her research explores how we can support people to improve their health behaviours, primarily working in the domains of physical activity, diet and health communication as they relate to obesity. Fiona’s work is grounded in behavioural science, focussing on improving the design and implementation of theoretically informed interventions, and better understanding how people respond to different types of community and national policy initiatives. Fiona is an academic advisor to the OHID National Child Measurement Programme board, and a member of the Advisory Committee for Social Sciences of the Food Standards Agency.

Fiona has worked on a range of projects within behavioural science, including interventions to promote weight management, smoking cessation, active transport, physical activity (in community and clinical settings) and healthy eating. Her current projects include work to implement guidance for parents on talking to children about weight, having led the development of a resource over the past few years to support parents when receiving feedback about their child’s weight as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. She is now also working with colleagues to expand this approach to other age groups and domains. Fiona also carries out research with older adults, exploring how ageism in physical activity settings may affect older adults’ engagement with physical activity, and exploring innovative approaches to try and tackle this.
