Sarah Denford

I am a research fellow in the Health Protection Research Unit in Behavioural Science and Evaluation at the University of Bristol. I am a behavioural scientist with expertise in health psychology, intervention development and qualitative research methods. I am particularly interested in how we develop public health interventions with people from underrepresented communities. Much of my work focuses on developing interventions to support infection control (vaccine uptake and sexual health) and physical activity.

Prior to joining the University of Bristol, I was a research fellow at the University of Exeter. Initially, I was part of the School for Public Health Research and subsequently part of the Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre. I also completed my PhD at the University of Exeter in the department of Primary Care.

Current projects:

  • Vaccination uptake among Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
  • HIV testing and prevention in primary care.
  • Developing support for people experiencing homelessness during extreme weather.
  • Co-producing public health interventions and guidance about personal protective. behaviours for people with multiple repeated exposures to avian influenza on infected premises.
  • The role of printed and social media during the global Mpox outbreak.
  • Co-creating public health alerts to mitigate health risks associated with adulterated or poor-quality heroin.
  • Supporting PrEP delivery in pharmacies.
  • Co-producing and evaluating public and sexual health interventions during an STI outbreak.
  • Supporting engagement of seldom heard communities when doing rapid co-design.
  • South West Gambling Harms Service Evaluation.
  • Co-production of an arts-based programme to prevent anxiety and depression in schools.
  • Exploring the role of incentives in vaccination uptake.
