Public Lecture

The BASES Outreach Project Team, which aims to increase public engagement and awareness of BASES, has planned a public talk, open to any interested parties, which will take place during the BASES 2023 Conference at the CBS Arena, Coventry. This free, public session, Exercise Training and the Menstrual Cycle: What’s a Girl to do? will take place from 5:15 pm to 6 pm on Thursday 16 November 2023.

The session will be presented by Dr Emma O’Donnell, a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Loughborough University. Emma has a specialist focus on the female athlete, including the effects of the menstrual cycle, menstrual disturbances, and sex hormones on athletic performance and cardiovascular function. In this public lecture, the ‘normal’ menstrual cycle, menstrual disturbances, and the Female Athlete Triad will be discussed.  Practical information on how parents and coaches can support female athletes to help prevent the development of any one component of the Triad will also be presented.

Outcomes for the session include describing the ‘normal’ menstrual cycle and hormonal profile; describing low energy availability and identify its key role in menstrual disturbances and subsequent changes in the hormonal profile and identifying the components of the Female Athlete Triad.

This free, public session is taking place in person at the CBS Arena, Coventry. For those not able to physically attend, there is an option to watch the session via Zoom. Places are limited for this public session. To reserve your place, both in person and virtual, please register via the link below.
